What does the magnet theme mean for students?

Our magnet theme is a way of making education exciting and engaging for students, while at the same time encouraging long term learning and deeper understanding of standard core subjects such as English, mathematics, science, and social studies. Each student is required to master all of the content and skills outlined by the State of New York and No Child Left Behind; however this content is framed and filtered through a lens of arts education.

What are students learning?

In addition to the standard NYS and NYC curriculum, each student takes an elective course such as Band, Strings, Chorus, or Art. The school also provides electives such as Spanish and Computer Technology. Furthermore, all students take part in at least three arts residencies throughout their middle school career. These residencies incorporate drama, musical theater, visual art, graphic design, digital music, dance, film and photography into the core curriculum. Residencies are anywhere from 10-15 weeks in length and are given by professional teaching artists affiliated with the Roundabout Theater Company, City Center, Queens Museum, American Ballroom Theater, In collaboration Inc., Studio in a School, and Magic Box Theater. These residencies are custom designed by professional artists who work in concert with our classroom teachers, magnet specialists, and school administrators.

How does integration of the arts support student achievement?

By integrating the arts into the curriculum and embedding them in all areas of study, not only do students gain an appreciation for, and mastery of the arts, but they begin to see the connection between different disciplines and attain a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the content and skills inherent in all subjects. Through project-based studies rooted in fine arts, students work on real life applications of various subject area content. For example, students might work on dramatic scenes based on historical events, museum installations depicting important scientific or mathematical theories and discoveries, or digital music compositions inspired by literature and poetry or the structural and timing patterns found in mathematics. These real world activities enable students to make the jump from simple rote understandings of core subjects to deeper, longer lasting understandings rooted in student-centered creations of art.
